Spring (Movement 3: Allegro)
A modern lyrical spin on the third movement of the Spring concerto from Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” arranged by Jennifer Eklund. This advanced piano solo provides ample opportunity to work on interpretation, rubato, and lyrical artistry.
Heptagon, by Rick Robertson, is an early-intermediate level showcase solo. A heptagon is a polygon with seven sides and seven angles. This piece, written in 7/8 time, gives a young pianist an opportunity to explore a relatively uncommon asymmetrical meter with a brief, driving, toccata-style showpiece.
This mysterious-sounding intermediate-level etude by Stacy Fahrion is ideal for introducing quarter-note triplets to students, and also is a wonderful recital piece. It eases students into playing 2 against 3 and 3 against 2 polyrhythms, and through playing it, students will learn how eighth-note triplets and quarter-note triplets relate. It begins in G Dorian and ends in D minor. Proxima Centauri is the closest star to the sun, but isn’t visible to the eye alone.
Autrefois (In Olden Days)
Autrefois (In Olden Days), composed by Rick Robertson, is a late intermediate lyrical solo that is an appropriate repertoire piece for recitals, contests, and festivals. It recalls the Paris of the late nineteenth century, with its evocation of early Impressionism. This piece is part of the Kaleidoscope Volume 3 songbook. This piece has been selected for the NFMC Festivals Bulletin, 2020-2024.
