Circle of Friends: Volume One

Circle of Friends, by Rick Robertson, is a two-volume collection containing a total of 24 character pieces for piano in each of the major and minor keys (minus enharmonic equivalents), in a manner similar to the Prelude sets by Chopin, Rachmaninoff, and the like. The sequence as published is arranged in a rough order of difficulty, allowing for convenience in page turns here and there.

The title alludes as well to the familiar “Circle of Keys’. As for “friends”, each piece is dedicated to a close friend, colleague, or student. A few pieces in Volume One are at the early intermediate level, while Volume Two is solidly at the intermediate level with a steady trajectory of more demanding musical concepts.

Introspection, composed by Rick Robertson is an intermediate level ambient solo with a mature sound. An opening lyrical, chordal section contrasts with a middle section featuring displaced accents. It also gives the performer an opportunity to experience the key of E-flat minor in a less intimidating setting.

Onward and Upward, composed by Rick Robertson, is an early intermediate level lyrical showcase solo. It features broken-chord writing in a parallel motion, building up to an effective conclusion.

Reassurance, composed by Rick Robertson, is an early intermediate level lyrical solo. It has a gentle sway in its rhythm, and a memorable melody. It could also be used as worship service music. It was inspired by the self-isolation and “social distancing” of the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020.

Prelude-Arabesque, composed by Rick Robertson, is an intermediate-level lyrical solo. There are two themes, one more harmonic (broken chords), and one more lyrical.

Novela, composed by Rick Robertson is an intermediate level lyrical solo. It has a haunting melody with a contrasting middle section.

Looking Back, composed by Rick Robertson, is an intermediate level solo in a lyrical style. This piece is ideal for teaching expressive phrasing, rubato, and careful use of the pedal.
