Layered voicings

Meditation, from Thais by Jules Massenet, is arranged for solo piano in loving memory of my father, concert violinist Hy Shulman. I have such wonderful memories of Dad playing this piece on his violin at family gatherings. Years later, I repeatedly played a recording of Thais when I was pregnant with our son. He grew up to be an accomplished violinist himself and reminds me so much of my father! The cover photo is a self-portrait of me sitting with our son on our dock while gazing at the Milky Way.

A hauntingly beautiful arrangement of Avinu Malkeinu (Our Father, Our King) arranged by Debbie Center. This piece is a beloved Jewish New Year prayer which is sung in synagogues around the world during the High Holidays of Rosh Hashana (New Year) and Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement). The blowing of the shofar, or ram’s horn, is an integral part of the services, announcing the new year to all. Often, the shofar is blown near a body of water. The cover features an Israeli shofar belonging to Debbie’s son, Joel. Debbie created the photograph at her lake home in Nevis, Minnesota.

Hey, Ho, Nobody Home is a traditional English carol usually sung as a three-part round. This arrangement by Stacy Fahrion begins with the round, then transitions into a spirited, danceable variation. This selection is ideal for intermediates.

Once in Royal David’s City, arranged by Rick Robertson is a late intermediate level arrangement of a less-familiar Christmas carol. It will make an effective recital selection, a prelude for church services, or perhaps for the Festival of Lessons and Carols.

Away in a Manger is a gentle, flowing arrangement that combines the two versions of this popular holiday tune that are well-known in both the U.K. and the U.S. Music by Jenny Walker.

The Sussex Carol (sometimes called “On Christmas Night All Christians Sing”) is a very popular carol in England. This arrangement by Jenny Walker, has a jaunty, 6/8 feel and is similar in style to “I Saw Three Ships”. It is a lovely, lilting carol with a joyous, rhythmic sway.

This is an original work by Jenny, depicting the journey made by a Troika, a Russian vehicle drawn by three horses over a snow-clad landscape. The dotted rhythm of right-hand notes gives a ragtime-like feel to the piece. The mood is cheeky and jovial, an intermediate-level thrill ride.
