Backyard Bash: Volume Two
Backyard Bash, Volume 2, is a collection of solos written for late beginning pianists who enjoy playing music with lyrics. It is the sequel to Backyard Bash and offers just enough additional difficulty to challenge and delight students. These pieces were written about actual creatures which inhabit our Southwest Virginia backyard, and the lyrics are intended to facilitate study of the music while also amusing the performer. I have found that my students love playing these songs because they sound more difficult than they are, and they are fun to sing along with! I hope you enjoy these musical nature studies and learn to play them all!
Dancing in Dreams
Dancing in Dreams is an engaging collection of eleven contemporary ballet-inspired solos by Lisa Donovan Lukas. These original selections feature an array of tonal centers and styles. From elegant lyrical solos to upbeat fun-to-play solos, these showcase pieces are ideal for intermediates of all ages.
Portrait No. 5: Refractions is an intermediate selection by Travis Lohmann, paying tribute to the minimalistic stylings of the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. The main focus of this piece is slow moving harmonic changes which gradually shift over time. Performers will enjoy the lyrical yet longing melody which gently plays over top the bed of simplistic yet increasingly interesting harmonies. Teachers can help students discover and analyze the changing harmonies throughout. A wonderful selection for both voice-leading and dynamics, this piece is a fine addition for both recital and concerts.
